Poor poultry famer rendered destitute by cyclone and rain in Gokul Nagar, government assistance only hope

Destiny in the form of a short-lived cyclone has played a cruel joke on a hapless poultry farmer of Gokul Nagar area under Bishalgarh subdivision. It was the dusky moment of sinister Saturday last that terrible-albeit short-lived-cyclone interspersed with heavy monsoon downpour struck the Gokul Nagar area and ransacked almost the entire habitation. But poor Bijay Sarkar (38) of Bhowmik para area of Gokul Nagar who was the worst affected by the sudden storm and rainfall.

Bijay Sarkar had drawn a loan of Rs 12 lakhs from the ‘Bandhan Bank’, having mortgaged his entire landed property , and launched a poultry farm in order to earn a viable livelihood as well as to educated their children. The husband and wife had started working hard on the newly built poultry farm from the very beginning . It was only on Thursday last-that is , on May 29-that Bijay Sarkar had purchased 2500 baby broiler chickens at Rs 50.00 a piece to rear them up and sell them at profit when they would grow up.

But the storm and rain on Saturday evening wreaked havoc with his newly built farm as they tin-shed over the farm was swept away by the cyclonic wind and fell at least 500 metres away exposing the baby broiler chickens to the killer elements. All the chickens including some grown up ones perished instantly from the impact of wind , lightning and heavy shower. Speaking of the calamity that had befallen him destitute Bijay Sarkar broke down in tears . “I had high hopes from this farm that I had set up by borrowing money from the bank but few moments of natural calamity destroyed everything ; I have nothing to fall back upon and I can survive with family only if the government grants me some financial assistance” said a disconsolate Bijay Sarkar.
