City Flooding Highlights Governance Failure: LoP Jitendra Choudhury

Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhury on Sunday strongly criticized the ruling BJP over the recurring water-logging crisis in Agartala, stating that the recent flooding had exposed the government's failure to address the issue effectively.
Choudhury pointed out that Saturday’s heavy rainfall brought the city to a standstill, even though the monsoon has not yet reached its peak. “A few hours of intense rain submerged most major areas. Back in 2018, the then Chief Minister had assured citizens that the water-logging issue would be permanently resolved. However, despite those promises, no substantial progress has been made,” he said.
He accused the administration of focusing more on publicity and cosmetic beautification like installing decorative lights, rather than implementing long-term infrastructure solutions. “For the past seven years, it’s been all show, with no effective action on the ground,” he added.
Choudhury urged the authorities to prioritize immediate measures, including ensuring all water pumps are operational and clearing blocked drains before the onset of full monsoon. He acknowledged that recent efforts to construct covered drains had begun, but said it would be impossible to complete the work in time. “Clearing drains and maintaining water pumps can significantly reduce public inconvenience,” he emphasized.
