The CPI(M) West Tripura district committee on Sunday submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate, demanding immediate relief for victims of severe flooding in the district.
Continuous rainfall has caused the Howrah River to overflow, submerging several low-lying areas. Affected localities include Rani Bazar to Resham Bagan, Chandrapur, South Chandrapur, Pratapgarh Hrishipally, Vidyasagar (Jogendranagar), Katasola, Navoday Dashamighat, Indira Colony, South Rajnagar, South Jayanagar, Kalikapur (Ramnagar), Minabari, Phooltali, Ranjit Nagar, Bitarbon, Daspara, and Hrishipally of Bhati Abhoynagar.
The party stated that thousands of families have lost their homes, with floodwaters damaging houses and destroying crops. Warning of a looming humanitarian crisis, it urged the administration to take swift action.
Key demands included 15 days of work under MGNREGA or TUEP for affected families, free rations, and financial aid from the Disaster Management Fund for house repairs and crop loss. The CPI(M) also called for emergency supplies of milk, baby food, clean water, medical camps in all affected areas, and spraying of disinfectants to prevent disease outbreaks. Restoration of damaged roads and drainage systems was also stressed.
