A Bangladeshi smuggler was shot dead by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel early Sunday following a violent clash along the India-Bangladesh border near Debipur, under Rangaouti Gram Panchayat in Kailashahar sub-division. The incident occurred between border pillars 56 and 57 amid heavy rain.
Sources said a group of Bangladeshi smugglers attempted to infiltrate the Indian side late on May 31. Taking advantage of low visibility due to the rain, they allegedly pelted stones and attacked BSF jawans with sharp weapons. Despite warnings and restraint, the group continued their assault, forcing the BSF to retaliate in self-defence.
One smuggler, later identified as Pradip Baidya (aged around 20–22) from Sharifpur village in Kulaura Upazila, Moulvibazar district, was shot below the left knee and collapsed. He was given first aid and taken to Unakoti District Hospital, where he was declared dead.
His brother, Jayanta Baidya, confirmed Pradip had gone missing the previous night. After contacting Bangladeshi authorities and filing a report at Kulaura Police Station, he learned of the death.
Following a post-mortem, the body is currently in the hospital morgue and will be handed over to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Monday.
