Tripura has set a target to raise its Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education from 20.7 (2021–22) to 30 by 2030, announced Raval Hamendra Kumar, Special Secretary of Higher Education. To meet this goal, the state will expand college infrastructure, increase student intake, and strengthen faculty resources.
Three new General Degree Colleges will start admissions from the 2025–26 academic year at Korbook, Ambassa, and Kakraban. B.A. programmes will also be introduced at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), Kunjaban, and the College of Teacher Education (CTE), Kumarghat. These steps aim to transition institutions into multi-disciplinary colleges in line with NEP 2020.
The state’s intake capacity is expected to rise from 31,379 in 2024–25 to 31,954 in 2025–26. Around 28,000 students are likely to clear their higher secondary exams this year.
To ensure fair and centralised admissions, Tripura will adopt the SAMARTH portal, now mandatory under Tripura University. Major infrastructure upgrades include a Rs 77 crore Science Building at MBB College, Rs 40 crore for Netaji Subhas Mahavidyalaya, and Rs 126 crore for the upcoming National Law University.
