Tension gripped Srilanka Basti in Chandrapur, on the outskirts of Agartala, following the tragic death of a three-year-old boy in a road accident on Monday evening. A speeding motorcycle ran over the child, Abir Das, while he was playing on the roadside.

The rider, identified as Ujjal Miah of South Chandrapur, allegedly fled the scene without offering assistance. Eyewitnesses said the accident could have been avoided had he been more cautious.

The child was rushed to GB Pant Hospital but was declared dead. His body was brought home after post-mortem for a brief stop-over, drawing a large crowd. Later, the last rites were performed at Battala crematorium.

In anticipation of unrest, police and Tripura State Rifles personnel were deployed. However, no major incident was reported. SDPO (Sadar) DP Ray confirmed that the situation remained peaceful and security was ensured throughout the funeral.

Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, Kiran Kumar, visited the area and confirmed the arrest of the accused. He has been forwarded to court after legal procedures. Normalcy has since returned, and security forces have been gradually withdrawn.
