Tripura BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee has sharply criticised former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar for his recent comments on the anti-Maoist operations in Chhattisgarh that led to the killing of 31 Maoist militants.

Speaking at a party event, Sarkar had remarked that the Maoists were “hunted like birds” and suggested that the government should have prioritised dialogue over armed action to address the rebels' concerns. His comments reflected the CPIM politburo’s statement issued on May 22, which also condemned the operation.

Bhattacharjee, hitting out at Sarkar, said, “This was one of the most successful anti-Maoist operations in recent years. It led to the death of Nambala Keshava Rao, the mastermind behind numerous deadly attacks. While the entire nation lauded the bravery of our forces, CPIM leaders appeared to mourn the loss of extremists.”

He added that Maoists have killed over 11,500 people since 1997, including civilians, security personnel, and political figures. “Manik Sarkar’s remarks raise serious questions. In their blind opposition to the Centre, the CPIM seems to be sympathising with anti-national elements,” he alleged.
