After remaining defunct for over three decades, efforts are now underway to revive the Kailashahar Airport in Tripura’s Unakoti district. A high-level team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) visited the site on Monday to assess its feasibility for restarting flight operations.
The inspection marks a significant step toward fulfilling a long-standing public demand. Various political and apolitical groups have repeatedly called for the airport’s reopening, citing the need for improved regional connectivity. The BJP had pledged to revive the airport before coming to power and, with the party now in control at both the state and central levels, the process appears to be gaining momentum.
The AAI team, led by North Eastern Regional Director M. Rajkishore, included Agartala Airport Director Kailash Chander Meena and senior district officials. They examined the current state of infrastructure, land availability, and operational challenges.
Rajkishore noted that while the primary survey is complete, further discussions with the state government are necessary. He added that affordability and route planning will be key to ensuring sustainable flight services from Kailashahar.
