During the past decade there has been major improvement in infrastructure almost all over the country but in many places the quality of work completed, specially road and highway network leaves a lot to be desired. In Tripura the point is proved by the extremely poor quality of national highway (208-B) constructed to connect Dharma Nagar with Agartala via Khowai-what with the liability to pay compulsory ‘Mandal’ tax, avarice of the construction firm and stray extortion. A poor and innocent driver paid with his life for the collective sin of the construction firm, sub-contractor and the extortionists.

Sources from Khowai said that a driver Ismail Mia (42) had been driving his truck from Dharma Nagar to Agartala via Khowai carrying essential commodities. In the early hours of Friday Ismail Mia had been crossing the Bachaibari-Behalabari area under Champahaor police station when he felt the urge to respond to nature’s call in nearby Nibaronbari area. Parking his truck beside the highway Ismail Mia was responding to nature’s call but at that time a container vehicle speeding for Dharma Nagar from Agartala reached the spot and bumped off the broken road after falling into a pit and hit Ismail Mia hard when he was standing beside the highway and fled. Late in the morning local people saw Ismail Mia lying injured on the side of the highway and sent him first to Khowai hospital where he was declared dead by the doctor on duty. Sources said that Ismail Mia is a resident of Kadamtala area of Dharma Nagar and his lifeless body has been sent back home today.

Meanwhile, Sahel Tripura (18), elder brother to nine yearold Ujjwasikha Tripura, children of Rahim Tripura of Narsingpara village under Kaladhepa area in Sabroom subdivision, was arrested by police yesterday on charge of killing his younger sister. Police sources said that on May 21 the dead body of Ujjwasikha Tripura had been recovered from a jungle near their house in Narsingpara village after she had gone missing from the previous day. After initial investigation police yesterday arrested the slain girl’s elder brother Sahel Tripura who confessed in the course of interrogation that he himself had strangled his younger sister to death after a quarrel over a mobile set. Sahel is now in police custody for further interrogation.
