Unnerved by the firm stand taken by army general Wakar-uj-Zaman on dithering over early elections and major opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) demand for early elections, the chief advisor to the illegitimate interim government, usurper Md Yunus is reportedly mulling resignation from his post and leaving Bangladesh. In a function of officers in the Bangladesh army’s headquarter in Dhaka, the commander in chief and general Wakar-uj-Zaman had on Wednesday called for elections to the National Assembly latest by December this year, asserting, quite significantly, that there should be no tinkering with the 1972 constitution of the country. The army general’s stern message was followed by a meeting of the interim advisory council yesterday and Md Yunus vented his frustration in the meeting over inability to bring about any meaningful change and also expressed his desire to resign from his post. Even though his advisorial colleagues tried to boost Yunus’s morale he remained unconvinced.
Sources from Bangladesh said that shortly after the meeting yesterday the convener of the Yunus sponsored National Citizens Party (NCP) Nahid Islam called at the chief advisor’s official residence in Jamuna area of Dhaka and spoke to him in detail. According to what Nahid later told BBC Bangla in an interview is that Yunus is deeply ‘frustrated’ and planning to resign from his post. Yunus’s stated intention to resign comes at a time when the Bangladesh economy is tottering on the brink because of the follies and irresponsible action of the interim government-a conglomerate of avaricious opportunists. The self-invited hostility with India leading to punitive action announced by the government of India , huge loans drawn from China and the IMF worsened by the virtual collapse of the manufacturing sector and an unprecedented flight of capital from the Dhaka share market have already led the country to the precipice of a massive economic disaster.
To add to Yunus’s woes the opposition BNP, natural successor to power, has upped the ante for early elections. After BNP secretary general Mirza Faqrul Alamgir’s strident demand for early elections, the party’s senior leader Zainal Abedin Farooqui today has called upon Yunus to declare a clear road-map for election to the National Assembly. Even as trouble for Yunus continues to multiply, the lone lady advisor of the interim government Syeda Rizwana Hasan, in charge of environmental affairs, has fuelled the fire further by stating in interaction with the media today that the interim government assumed power not only for holding elections but for ensuring reform and justice as well . No reaction from the opposition to Syeda’s statement is still available but the fluid situation is going from bad to worse, sources from across the border said.
