Bangladesh Embankment Blamed for Waterlogging in Belonia After Moderate Rainfall

A few hours of moderate rainfall on Saturday night led to severe waterlogging across several areas on the northern bank of the river Muhuri, particularly affecting Ballamukha under Sukanta Nagar Panchayat.
Local residents claim this is the first time water has overflowed into Indian territory following the construction of a new embankment by Bangladeshi authorities on the opposite side of the river. They allege the structure violates international norms, as it has been built just 10 to 50 yards from the international border, despite agreements mandating a 150-yard clearance.
The embankment, which stretches about 1 to 1.5 kilometres and stands 15 to 20 feet high, reportedly lacks proper water drainage provisions. Natural canals have also been blocked, worsening the situation.
Farmers in the area are already suffering from crop and fish pond submersion caused by last week’s rain. Concerned villagers fear that without corrective action, heavier monsoon rains could lead to catastrophic flooding and long-term damage to livelihoods and infrastructure in the region.
