PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte on Thursday addressed recent concerns regarding the deteriorating condition of the National Highway, particularly the Khowai-Kamalpur section. He clarified that the 25.6 km stretch, completed on April 17, 2023, remains within its five-year Defect Liability Period (DLP) and was constructed under MoRTH specifications with approval from an Independent Special Project Monitoring Unit.

However, severe rainfall in August 2024 caused significant pavement distress across nearly 12 km. The Khowai Bypass, between Km 96.000 and Km 97.000, witnessed major settlement, with further issues reported from Km 89+000 to Km 94+000 and Km 95+000 to Km 101+300. Field inspections revealed alligator cracking and upheaval in pavement and subgrade layers.

The EPC Contractor suggested that high groundwater saturation weakened the subgrade soil. In response, NHIDCL has proposed a detailed study by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), whose expert team is expected to begin assessment within 15 days.

A joint site inspection was held on May 7 by senior officials, and the Chief Minister held a meeting with NHIDCL’s Executive Director to discuss ongoing efforts. The government remains committed to timely rectification and public safety.
