Justice (retired) Arindam Lodh as chairman of THRC makes important recommendations to state government for patient welfare in GBP hospital

Justice (retired) Arindam Lodh of Tripura high court has made certain crucial recommendations to the GBP hospital and health department for welfare of poor patients after a thorough visit to the hospital yesterday in his capacity as the chairman of Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC). He had visited the GBP hospital, accompanied by member secretary of THRC Udit Chowdhury, also a retired judge, Ratan Biswas, DSP Lalhim Malsum and office superintendent of THRC.
Justice Lodh visited the hospital in a thorough manner, acting on a media report that a poor and aged patient named Madal Das in urgent need of medical care had been lying in front of the trauma centre of the hospital but no doctor, nurse or staff members of any other department engaged in the hospital had taken any care of him or had admitted him to hospital. Justice Lodh made detailed inquiries about the matter and was briefed that following the publication of a report in this regard in a local daily the man was indeed admitted to the hospital but he died on April 6 due to old age ailments and lack of care.
After coming to know of this and having visited the spot where Madan Das had been lying Justice (retired) Arindam Lodh held a meeting in the chamber of medical superintendent Dr Sankar Chakraborty with deputy medical superintendent Dr Kanak Chowdhury, the principal-in-charge of AGMC, executive engineer of PWD and other medical officers in attendance. In the course of discussion many important health related issues came up and Justice Lodh made a five point recommendations for improvement on of services in the GBP hospital.
The recommendations include issuance of a list of dos and donts by the medical superintendent of the GBP hospital highlighting need for taking care of patients, organizing joint awareness programme among patients and health staff in presence of representatives from line departments like social welfare, PWD, NGOs , formation of inter-departmental co-ordination committee with line department, inspection at regular intervals of the GBP hospital and its infrastructure by PWD and health staff, conversion of an under-construction infrastructure near the trauma centre into a resting place for patients. Official sources said that the recommendations of the human rights commission are binding in nature and Justice Arindam Lodh’s recommendations will be duly acted upon by the state government.
