The Tripura Pradesh Congress launched its state-wide 'Save the Constitution' campaign from Belonia under South Tripura on Tuesday, with party president Asish Kumar Saha accusing the BJP-led central government of systematically undermining the Constitution and promoting communal division.
Leading a procession from the local Congress office through the streets of Belonia, Saha addressed a gathering at No. 1 Tilla, where he criticised the Centre for introducing the Waqf Bill, alleging it was designed to target a particular community. He also flagged issues such as unemployment, rising prices, and unfulfilled promises on government vacancies.
“This is not just a political campaign—it’s a people’s movement to protect the foundational values of our democracy,” Saha told reporters. He said the Congress would be holding similar protests across Tripura throughout May as part of a nationwide initiative by the All India Congress Committee.
The campaign, decided during a Constitution Day meeting at Delhi’s Talkatora Stadium, is aimed at countering what the party calls the growing threat of religious fundamentalism and institutional erosion under the BJP regime. The protests will include conventions, public rallies, and the submission of charters of demands to local administrations.
Several senior leaders, including former minister Monindra Reang, veteran Congress leader Rajendra Mahajan, and district Congress heads, joined Tuesday’s event, alongside members of the party’s SC/ST Cell, Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, Kisan Congress, and Seva Dal.
Saha said the so-called ‘double engine’ government in Tripura had failed to ensure peace and governance, and that the Congress would continue to raise its voice against this failure at every level.
