Long before the advent of the social media in all its manifestations , school students in the country had to write essays on the topic of whether ‘science is a blessing or curse’. Now in the overwhelming presence of social media it is perhaps apt to ask students to write an essay or paragraph on the topic of whether ‘social media is a blessing or curse’. The flurry of fake news , propaganda and provocative posts so dominate the social media that any follower finds it extremely difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff-often with dangerous consequences.
The danger posed by the social media has come to the fore this morning with the arrest of a Fire Service employee from Kadamtala under Dharma Nagar subdivision of north Tripura. Mansur Ali (28), a Fire Service employee, had posted a highly objectionable picture in the social media showing prime minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath looking like dogs in chains and being pulled by the MIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi.
The post had drawn attention of a number of ‘Facebook’ followers immediately and filing of complaints followed. As a result Mansur Ali was arrested immediately and put behind bars. He is likely to be produced in court by Kadamtala police later in the day and his remand will be sought for custodial interrogation.
