Tripura Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Saturday alleged that because of the present government’s lack of farsightedness, the New Year festivities in the rural areas of Tripura were dampened. He claimed the wages of MGNREGA and TUEP schemes that ensure flow of cash in the economy in the comparatively dry season had not been cleared during the festivities of Bengali New Year, Buisu, and Garia.
“Different communities observe festivals differently but this time is considered to be crucial for all due to the festivities. Due to natural reasons, people in the rural areas undergo some financial hardships at this point of time because of the dry season. This period is not considered to be harvest season for both traditional agriculture and shifting cultivation so generally due to festivities people need some money. When the Left Front was in power, it became a tradition that payments of different schemes were cleared. But, this government seems to be ignorant about the basic needs of people,” he added. According to Chaudhary, when the CPIM party tried to raise those issues through democratic movements they faced resistance and in some places violent attacks from the end of ruling BJP. Stating that a party rally in Agartala's Dukli division came under attack, Chaudhury said, “It is for the ninth time, this Dukli division office was attacked. A similar attack was planned at Rajnagar in South Tripura as well where we avoided the route in which BJP activists gathered.” He condemned the incidents and urged the government to ensure a conducive atmosphere for holding democratic protests and rallies.
