The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Asish Kumar Saha has addressed a letter to the state chief secretary J.K.Sinha seeking urgent measures to resolve problems arisen for the residents of Belonia and Kailasahar subdivisions from the illegal construction of high embankments by Bangladesh close to the no-man’s land on the border. In his letter Asish has drawn the attention of the chief secretary to the recent protests made by Indian people living close to the border with Bangladesh in Belonia and Kailasahar and said that unless the matter is taken up with the government of India for a settlement the Indian people in Belonia and Kailasahar will suffer immensely during the upcoming season from heavy flooding, loss of lives and livelihood.
He said that traditionally the Bangladesh side has complained of lack of water flow into their country from India in dry season and overflow during monsoon when all the rivers swell up owing to heavy rainfall. “There are also specific terms and conditions in the river water sharing agreement between the two countries but now it seems that the interim government of Bangladesh is acting in violation of terms and conditions of the agreements ; the matter needs to be looked into afresh for a settlement , specially in view of the heavy damages to lives and properties in flood in August last year” said Asish.
He also pointed out that at the time of erection of border fencing the government of India had executed the construction 150 metres wihin Indian territory , incurring heavy loss in terms of agricultural land and products. But the new problem created by Bangladesh through construction of illegal agreements will further worsen the existing problems, specially in Belonia and Kailasahar. Asish urged upon the chief secretary to take up the issue with the Indian authority in the joint river commission between the two countries.
