Amidst the police drive against drugs and ‘Ganja’ growing addiction to liquor , specially spurious liquor has been taking a heavy toll on family life and well being. This liquor addiction has also started leading to deaths and suicides as evident from an unfortunate incident that occurred in the Aralia area of Pratapgarh , south of Agartala town across the river Hawrah.
According to police sources Paltu Das (35), a day labourer by profession and resident of Aralia Gopitilla area, was in the habit of returning home every night in heavily drunken condition and picking up quarrels with his wife. Paltu who was a father of two small children returned home last night around 10-00 PM in an ebriated condition and started unnecessarily quarrelling with his wife Joba Das. Unable to cope with her husband’s daily tantrums Joba left home with her two children and remained outside for about half an hour by which time, she thought, her husband would have fallen asleep.
But much to her horror Joba found her husband hanging dead from the ceiling of their thatched house and started crying for help. The local people came and saw the scene and informed police personnel of the College Tilla outpost. Sources said that the police team pulled down the dead body of Paltu Das and sent it for post-mortem in the GBP hospital. A case of suicide has been registered . The suicide of Paltu Das has cast a shadow of grief in the area as , despite his addiction to alcohol, he was known to be a polite and well-behaved man in the locality.
