World Book Day celebrated in Bir Chandra State Central Library premises in festive mood

The day of 23rd April is the death anniversary day of a number of stalwarts of world literature including British playwright and poet William Shakespeare and Spanish author Miguel De Cerventes , known world-wide as the author of ‘Don Quixote’. In order to commemorate the immortal creative souls as well as to promote reading , publishing and copy-right of books the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) had initiated the observance of world book from 23rd April 1995.
In conformity with the tradition set by UNESCO the Bir Chandra State Central Library , Tripura’s first governmental public library launched by king Bir Chandra Maniky in 1886, currently housed in the old secretariat building , today celebrated with the occasion in a festive mood in the open space in front of the library. In the presence of library officials , employees, senior and regular readers a portrait of William Shakespeare was garlanded first by the head librarian Arunangshu Das , followed by others present on the occasion. The senior librarian of the central library Manoranjan Debbarma delivered stirring speech in which he discussed at length the importance of the day and how and why world book day had been scheduled to be observed on 23rd April by the UNESCO.
