Despite assurances of affordable prices at the Maharaj Gonj market, buyers on New Year’s Day found only Hilsa available at government counters, while bustling crowds continued at both fish and meat markets.

Reportedly, as every New Year unfolds with heightened activity at the fish and meat markets, this year’s celebrations were marred by disappointment. Tripura’s Fish Minister Sudhansu Das had declared that fish would be sold affordable prices at the Capitals Maharaj Gonj market on New Year’s Day. However, many consumers who set out eager to avail the offer ended up returning empty-handed. Customer complaints centered on the fact that aside from Hilsa, no other variety of fish was available at the government counters. Despite these issues, local traders noted that the market prices for fish and meat remained consistent with regular days, and the typical New Year crowds were once again evident at the open markets.
