East Agartala Police on Sunday arrested one Kanika Nath Bhowmik, a resident of the city, in compliance with a non-bailable arrest warrant issued by the Hon’ble High Court of Tripura. The arrest was carried out earlier in the day, and the accused has been produced before the court, according to official sources from the police station. The arrest comes in the backdrop of an ongoing legal battle related to a matrimonial dispute between Kanika Nath Bhowmik and her estranged husband, Timirendu Bhowmik, gas agency owner and resident of Krishnanagar, Agartala. In a written communication addressed to Tripura Info, Mr. Bhowmik expressed his dismay over a recent press conference by Kanika Nath, which was streamed via the outlet’s news page.

In his statement, Mr. Bhowmik clarified that he and Kanika Nath had been married for several years and are parents to two daughters. However, he alleged that their marriage was plagued by constant conflict, despite which he purchased properties in his wife’s name for the family's welfare. After Kanika Nath sought divorce, the Hon’ble High Court directed Mr Bhowmik to purchase a one-BHK flat within the Agartala Municipal Corporation area for her, along with a provision for regular monthly alimony.

The court, however, reportedly offered an alternative — that the properties in question, bought with Mr. Bhowmik’s earnings but registered in Kanika Nath’s name, be transferred through a deed of gift to their daughters. Mr. Bhowmik claims that Kanika Nath had agreed to this condition and had signed accordingly before the court. But before the scheduled date for the deed registration, she allegedly went missing, leading to her absence in further court proceedings.

Eventually, due to her repeated non-appearance, the High Court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against her — the very warrant under which she has now been arrested.

In a sharp rejoinder, Mr. Bhowmik questioned how a person facing such legal action could hold a press conference and publicly make allegations. He also attached a copy of the High Court judgment to support his claims and urged media community to verify facts more rigorously before publishing content that may mislead the public.

Adding to the concern, retired judge justice, Arindam Lodh, alleged that Kanika Nath made derogatory and defamatory remarks not just against her ex-husband but also against the Hon’ble High Court of Tripura.

The incident has raised questions about media responsibility, the importance of verifying facts before dissemination, and the ethical boundaries of public allegations made during ongoing judicial proceedings. After Arresting Kanika Nath Bhowmik, East Agartala police station In-charge Rana Chatterjee said in front of the media that the Further investigation is underway in this matter.
