The life-size statue of former CPI (M) stalwart, deputy chief minister Baidyanath Majumder, installed in 2012, had been demolished by the over-enthusiastic and unruly BJP supporters in the year 2018 at Srirampur trijunction in Chandipur assembly constituency in Kailasahar subdivision. Despite a statewide outrage nothing was done by the then BJP government in this regard but a fresh trouble broke out on the night of last April 10 when another group of unruly BJP supporters installed a statue of Hindu God Lord Ram on the altar vacated by the demolition of Baidyanath Majumder’s statue.
Amidst the statewide unspoken resentment over the issue the minister for sports and social welfare and MLA of Chandipur Tinku Roy fuelled the fire by indirectly justifying the demotion as well as installation of a statue of Lord Ram. “The demolition in 2018 had taken place as part of mob fury and not out of any political motivation ; this alter where the statue had stood had also become vulnerable to road accidents and there was also a demand from the local people for removal of the altar” said Tinku. He added that the BJP does not want politics over the issue and if CPI (M) wants the statue of Baidyanath Majumder can be installed in front of their party office with co-operation from the government. Tinku also pleaded ignorance of who had installed the statue of Lord Ram and how on the space vacated by the demolition of Baidyanath Majumder’s statue. The CPI (M) is yet to react to the minister’s statement.
