On the occasion of Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, the Tripura Fisheries Department will supply 6,000 kg of fish at subsidised rates across 21 locations in the state, Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das announced on Monday.

Fish being an essential part of the Bengali New Year celebrations, the move aims to control market prices, which typically surge due to high demand. “To keep prices reasonable, fish will be sold directly to consumers from 8 AM onwards,” said Das.

Various fish varieties including Rohu, Katla, and Curfew will be available at prices ranging from Rs 220 to Rs 350 per kg, depending on their weight. Marine fish will be sold at Rs 150 per kg at the Maharajganj Bazar counter in Agartala, operated by the Tripura Fisheries Apex Cooperative Society.

Special arrangements have been made for Hilsa, a festive favourite. Hilsa weighing 800g to 1kg will be priced at Rs 1,200 per kg, while those between 1.2kg to 1.5kg will cost Rs 1,500 per kg.

The initiative is intended to make quality fish affordable for all citizens during the festivities.
