Accused Facing Non-Bailable Warrant Holds Press Conference at Agartala Press Club to Allegedly Divert Attention from Criminal Charges

Kanika Nath Bhowmik, a resident of Krishnanagar, Agartala and estranged wife of Timirendu Bhowmik, held a press conference today at the Agartala Press Club, accusing her husband of attempting to murder her. However, serious legal controversies surround her appearance, as she has been evading a non-bailable arrest warrant issued by the Tripura High Court in an ongoing contempt and divorce case.

According to Mr. Timirendu Bhowmik, his wife Kanika Nath has been defying the orders of the Hon’ble High Court for months. Despite a bailable warrant issued on 6th September 2024 directing her appearance before the court on 12th September, she failed to comply. The High Court took serious note of her absence and suo moto impleaded the State of Tripura as a party in the case for failing to enforce the court’s order.

Mr. Bhowmik stated that although he had agreed to buy a flat for his wife and provide monthly alimony as per the court's direction, Kanika Nath went missing before the scheduled registration of the property. The court then issued a non-bailable warrant for her arrest. Despite this, no action has reportedly been taken by the local police.

Further complicating the matter, the Supreme Court of India on 13th September 2024 dismissed Kanika Nath’s special leave petition and upheld the High Court’s order. The apex court granted her four more weeks — as a final opportunity — to comply with the directives issued.

Mr. Bhowmik has questioned how a person against whom a valid non-bailable arrest warrant exists is being allowed to hold press conferences without any police intervention. He demanded immediate action from law enforcement authorities and urged the media to recognize the legal background behind today's press conference.

This development has sparked serious concerns regarding the enforcement of court orders and the functioning of law and order mechanisms in the state.
