As the initial lunatic euphoria over change of regime in Bangladesh is fast fizzling out the avowedly anti-India interim regime is now feeling the pinch from many parts of the political landscape Bangladesh now seems to be trying for mending fences with India. Reports from across the border said that the interim government has already sought a meeting between chief advisor Md Yunus and Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the upcoming three-day conclave of the heads of states of the seven member states of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi Sectoral Technical and Economic Co-operation (BIMSTEC) from April 2nd to 4th in Bangkok. The request for the meeting between Yunus and Modi had been made by the Bangladesh side possibly to begin a thaw in the frosty relations between the two closest neighbours since the ouster of the Awami League in August last year. However, there has been no response from the Indian side to the request from Bangladesh. This was stated by the deputy to the chief advisor on foreign affairs Tauhid Hossain who admitted that the Bangladesh government was yet to respond to the plea for the meeting. However, sources from Bangladesh suggested that the interim government is still hopeful of a meeting between Yunus and Modi.

Meanwhile, leading cricketers of Bangladesh continue to be persecuted by the interim government that began the programme of vengeance since August 5 last year. Former skipper of Bangladesh cricket team Mustafizur Rahaman had his entire house burnt down by unruly and violent fundamentalists that forced the regime change in August last year since Mustafizur had been closely attached to the Awami League and had also been an MP elected for two consecutive terms. Another captain of Bangladesh cricket team Shakib Al Hassan is being hounded now as a government-controlled court passed an order directing the government to seize properties of Shakib who, besides being a great cricketer, was closely attached to ousted Awami League. Liton Das, one of only two Hindu cricketers in the national team, was arbitrarily dropped from the national cricket team for the just-concluded Champions trophy despite a sterling performance and track-record while Soumya Sarkar is out of the team. Besides, former opening batsman Tamim Iqbal yesterday suffered a massive heart attack from severe depression and is now confined in the ICU of a Dhaka hospital.
