In a significant move the state government has decided to increase the Minimum Support Price of ARC potato seeds @ Rs 3 per kg to protect the farmers from incuring loss due to heavy production this year. As per the decision the government will purchase Potato seeds @ Rs 28 per KG which was Rs 25 last year.
Recently the farmers had drew the attention of the Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath that the market price has fallen below the production cost due to heavy supply in the market. They appealed the minister to increase the support price to save them from heavy loss.
The decission has evoked huge enthusiasm among the farmers in Shantir Bazar and adjoining villages which potato is the main crop of the farmers. They said the new decision will save them from incuring loss as the market price of the potato is running below Rs 20 per kg now.
Last year the Agriculture Department imported 18 tons of high yield potato seeds of Mohon, Himalini, Udai, Lima and Thartu vatriety and was cultivated in the fields of 104 farmers. This year the high yield varity was cultivated in the field of 400 farmers with the seeds collected from their fields.
The Agriculture department is very much happy with the result and planning to cultivate these high yield in the field of 4000 farmers.
