The Tripura government’s decision to establish the state’s first-ever Women’s University by upgrading the historic Women’s College in Agartala is a landmark moment for regional education. By offering Master’s programs in core Arts, Science, and Commerce streams, and subsequently rolling out professional courses like BBA, MCA, and Law, the university is laying a robust foundation for women’s financial independence and corporate readiness. However, to truly transform this institution into a forward-thinking center of excellence, the academic blueprint must extend beyond conventional tracks. As the administration maps out its next phase of departmental expansions, integrating Liberal Arts, Cultural Studies, and Gender Studies is not just an elective luxury—it is an absolute necessity for 21st-century holistic empowerment.
1. Liberal Arts: Cultivating Critical Thinkers and Leaders dedicated Department of Liberal Arts breaks down traditional academic silos. Master Degree in Liberal Arts is also in IIT Guwahati. Instead of restricting students to rigid single-subject boundaries, a Liberal Arts framework allows young women to combine humanities, natural sciences, and creative thinking. Modern industries do not just value technical repetition; they value problem-solving, critical reasoning, and adaptability. Women trained in Liberal Arts excel in policymakers' roles, administrative services (IAS/TPS), ethical AI research, and corporate strategy. It transitions the university from a place that merely grants degrees to a laboratory that produces visionary leaders.
2. Women’s and Gender Studies: The Core Identity of a Women's University While Tripura University currently houses a Women’s Studies Centre which is only a P.G Diploma not a Department for pursuing Masters or PhD so a dedicated state-level department at the new university would serve a unique, grassroots purpose. Rather than duplicating existing research, this department can focus directly on the intersection of gender, regional economics, and policy implementation. Women’s university has a distinct social responsibility. A Department of Gender Studies provides female students with the vocabulary and framework to analyze structural inequalities, legal rights, and health equity. This department will act as a primary talent pipeline for NGOs, the United Nations, human rights organizations, and the State Department of Social Welfare. It ensures that the university directly serves the socio-economic advancement of the Northeast.
3. Cultural Studies: Preserving and Monetizing Northeast Heritage Tripura and the wider Northeast region possess an incredibly rich tapestry of indigenous traditions, linguistic diversity, and distinct socio-political histories. A Department of Cultural Studies would institutionalize the study of this heritage. It provides a platform to systematically document local folklore, textiles, and the historical roles of tribal women in governance and economic sustainability. Cultural Studies bridges the gap between heritage and modern industry. Graduates from this department can directly feed into creative industries, curation, museum management, international tourism, and the digital preservation of regional identities.
Aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020)Integrating these three departments perfectly matches the directives of India's National Education Policy (NEP 2020), which explicitly mandates multidisciplinary education and flexible, cross-domain learning. For instance a student pursuing a Master's in Commerce could cross-register for courses in Gender Studies to specialize in corporate diversity management. A Mass Communication student could take modules in Cultural Studies to build authentic, hyper-local digital content for global platforms.
So I should request the state government to introduce these new subjects for the holistic development of the state and for the benefit of the students not only in the Women state University but also in TIT at Narsingarh will be upgraded to a technical university, in their Social science and Humanities Department.
