The Library of Lost Lives

Armaan Khanna, a 17-year-old thoughtful teenager, often feels uncertain about his future. Growing up in a tranquil town, he spends most of his time reading books and thinking about the dilemmas people make in life. While others seem confident about their paths, Armaan constantly speculates how different his life might have been if he had made different decisions.

One rainy evening, while returning home from school, he saw a old anomalous building that he had never encountered before, even though he had lived in his town his whole life. Armaan decided to delve into the old building, as his mom, Ananya Khanna, was not home. She had said that she would return late that day, so there was no one to scold him if he was late. He climbed up the stairs and reached a door with the words written on it: “The Library of Lost Lives.” He felt curious, yet slightly scared to explore the room. Still, he crossed the threshold and saw a library that seemed endless, with thousands of books, each glowing faintly on the shelves.

Suddenly, Mr. Alistair Caldwell, the librarian, called Armaan. Armaan got startled but somehow managed to calm himself. Mr. Caldwell told him, “Each book in this library represents a parallel timline that you could have lived if you had made different choices.” Curious, Armaan sat on a chair and opened the first book. As he went through the pages, he experienced that life as if it were real. In that life, he had designated a different career and had become very successful.

On the first day, he read only one book and then returned home. He told his mother that every evening he would come home late because he wanted to read more books in that unsettling , endless library. His mother agreed, and he began visiting the library every day after returning from school. Eventually, he started reading more books. In one life, he became rich and famous. In another, he became a doctor who saved thousands of lives. But some books showed dimmer paths. In one life, he became lonely and miserable. In another, he made terrible decisions that hurt the people he loved.Whenever he returned from the library, he realized that hours had passed in the real world, even though it felt like years inside the books. Mr. Caldwell warned him that reading too many books might cause him to forget who he truly was and trap him permanently in one of those alternative lives. Slowly, something strange began to happen. Armaan’s real memories started fading, replaced by the memories of the lives he had read. Riya Malhotra, his closest friend, began noticing that Armaan was acting distant and strange, as if he were living in two different worlds.

Rohan Dey, Armaan’s childhood friend, also grew suspicious and started questioning where Armaan disappeared every evening. Armaan had changed completely by then. Earlier, he used to laugh loudly and play with his friends both in and out of school. Now, he sat quietly in class and stopped spending time with his friends. Inside one of his alternative lives, Armaan met Aisha Verma, a girl who seemed to appear again and again in different versions of those lives. This made him wonder if some connection existed beyond the choices he made.

Seeking answers, Armaan later consulted Professor Dev Mehta, a scholar who had once studied ancient myths about mysterious places where forgotten human paths are stored. As Armaan continued reading more books, he discovered a dark figure inside the library known as The Silent Reader, who seemed to be reading books about Armaan’s life itself. Soon, he learned that deep within the library existed The Keeper of Forgotten Paths, a hidden presence that controlled the alternate realities inside the books.

The more lives Armaan explored, the more his memories faded. Now, he had to choose whether to continue chasing his perfect life inside the books or close them forever before he lost himself completely. Armaan made the wrong decision and chose to keep chasing his perfect life inside those ancient books. As he continued reading, he began to forget small details of his real life, and he became frightened. Simple memories, like the sound of Riya’s laughter or the streets of his neighborhood, started feeling distant, as if they belonged to someone else.

Riya Malhotra became deeply worried. She noticed that Armaan sometimes paused in the middle of conversations and struggled to remember ordinary things. It felt as if part of him was slowly disappearing, yet he still refused to stop reading those mysterious books. Rohan Dey decided to secretly follow Armaan one evening. He watched as Armaan walked down a quiet street and entered a strange old building he had never seen before — The Library of Lost Lives.

Rohan observed him reading the books and later decided to confront him. Armaan was shocked and didn’t want to tell the truth, but eventually he admitted everything. Although it sounded unbelievable, he explained the library, the alternative lives, and the mysterious books. Desperate for answers, Armaan visited Professor Dev Mehta again. The professor was deeply worried about Armaan’s condition and revealed an old legend: people who explore too many alternative paths may slowly lose their original lives, becoming trapped forever between realities.

Meanwhile, inside the library, The Silent Reader continued watching Armaan from the shadows, quietly turning the pages of a book that seemed to contain Armaan’s own story. Mr. Alistair Caldwell warned him once again that the deeper parts of the library were controlled by The Keeper of Forgotten Paths, a powerful presence that preserved every possible life but never allowed anyone to escape once they had lost themselves completely.

Wanting to protect Armaan’s real life, Professor Dev Mehta suggested that Armaan read one final book to understand which life truly belonged to him. Otherwise, he might never escape the alternative lives inside the books. Armaan began searching for the final book that might help him discover who he truly was. With Riya and Rohan trying to help him remember his real self, Armaan returned to the library one last time, facing The Silent Reader and the dark corridors where the Keeper’s presence could be felt.

Standing in front of the endless shelves of possible lives, Armaan had to make the most important choice of all — not which life could have been perfect, but whether he was brave enough to accept and live the imperfect life that was truly his. Finally, he found the book that revealed who he truly was. With that realization, Armaan managed to escape The Keeper of Forgotten Paths and The Library of Lost Lives.
