Once upon a time there was a king in a region which is situated in 3-5km south of the main Udaipur town in the Gomati district of Tripura in the present. The region of the king which I am saying is near about 16th century in the royal history. It is recognized as one of the 51 Sakti Peethas. The temple was constructed in 1501 AD by Maharaja Dhanya Manikyar, the king to be referred at first. He was a prominent king of the Manikya dynasty. The Tripura Sundari Temple is also known as the to Katakari & it was established in 1501 AD(1423 Saka Era)
Accordingly to the Rajmala ( the royal chronicle of Tripura kings and local folklore), Maharaja Dhanya Manikya originally intended to build a temple dedicated to lord vishnu. However, the goddess Tripura sundari appeared to the king in a dream and instructed him to install her idol on a hill top near Udaipur, the capital of her kingdom at that time. The site which was choosed was already dedicated to lord Vishnu. The king was in a dilemma until the dream was repeated. The goddess explained to him that Vishnu Shakti are different manifestation of the same Supreme Deity. The king followed the divine instructions, placing the goddess Tripura Sundari as the providing deity, while still honoring the spots, earlier de association with vishnu.
As per pithamala Grantha, Mataba is the place where the Dakshina Pada (right foot/toe) of Sati fell during lord Shiva's Tandava dance of destruction. The idol of the goddess Tripura Sundari was brought from chittagong (now in Bangladesh). It is a 5-foot-light, Stunning idol made of reddish-black kasti stone. The temple is build on a small hillock that resembles the shape of a tortoise (Kurma). In Hindu Tantric tradition, this is considered as extremely auspicious location for a shakti temple earning it the name Kurma Peeth.
The temple represents a blend of vaishanism and shaktism. The Statue of Tripura sundari is worshiped alongside a shaligram shila(a Stone representation of lord vishnu). It was mainly designed in the traditional Bengali Ek ratna (single-tower) Style, restbling a rural Bengali hut with a comed domey. A fascinating aspect of the temple's history is the synthesis of two Hindu traditions.
While dedicated to the Goddess (Shakta), the temple holds a Shaligram Shila. (representing lord Vishnu/Krishna)beside the idol of the mother godess. The nearby lake, kalyan Sagar, is believed to have been duge by the king and is sacred, home to large tortoises that are Protected are worshipped.
But later it is believed that a later invasion in the 16th century by the Mog. forces of Arabcan damaged the crown of the temple, which was later repaired by Maharaja Kalyan Manikya (1625-1660 AD).Another major renovation wait carried out by Queen Sumitra in 1857 AD.
The history of Matabari is defined by a 16th century king's devotion leading to the establishment- of a permanent premier Shakti Shrine that blended existing Vishnu worship with the worship of Maa Tripura Sundari, creating a unique, enduring spiritual center for the state of Tripura.
