On the morning of December 10, as winter sunlight filters through the streets of Agartala, the Prajna Bhawan auditorium will transform into a sanctuary of conscience. The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC), under the stewardship of Justice (retired) Arindam Lodh, has envisioned a gathering that is not merely ceremonial but deeply symbolic—a reminder that the struggle for human dignity is both timeless and urgent. The programme, beginning at 11 a.m. in Hall No-1 of Prajna Bhawan, will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, whose presence underscores the state’s commitment to safeguarding rights in the face of modern challenges. Alongside him, Advocate General Shaktimay Chakraborty, Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar, and Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission Jharna Debbarma will lend their voices to the chorus of justice. Their speeches, woven with reflections on law, governance, and social responsibility, will carry the resonance of accountability and hope.

Human Rights Day, observed globally on December 10, commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. In Tripura, this observance acquires a unique texture: it is not only about aligning with international ideals but also about addressing local realities—issues of gender justice, tribal rights, and the dignity of marginalized communities. The presence of Law Secretary Sankari Das further emphasizes the legal scaffolding upon which these aspirations rest. The event will last until 1 p.m., but its echoes will linger far beyond the walls of Prajna Bhawan. Each speech, each reflection, will serve as a reminder that rights are not abstract entitlements but lived experiences. They are the breath of freedom in a society that must constantly guard against complacency and injustice. What makes this year’s observance particularly poignant is its scale and inclusivity. By convening voices from governance, law, and civil society, THRC is crafting a narrative that human rights are not the domain of activists alone—they are the responsibility of every citizen, every institution. In a time when global headlines often speak of conflict and displacement, Tripura’s celebration becomes a beacon of solidarity, a reaffirmation that even in a small northeastern state, the ideals of justice can shine brightly.Behind the scenes, the able hand of THRC Secretary Shri Dhanbabu Reang, IAS has ensured that the event’s organization reflects the same spirit of dedication as its message. His efforts, though quiet, are integral to the seamless unfolding of a day that will stand as a testament to collective resolve.

As the day unfolds, one can imagine the words of Justice Arindam Lodh presiding over the gathering: a call to remember that rights are fragile unless defended, and that the true measure of a society lies in how it treats its most vulnerable. International Human Rights Day in Tripura will thus be more than an event—it will be a living testament to the enduring struggle for dignity, equality, and freedom.
