Workshop on Management of Community Radio Stations and its Impact on Society

A two-day workshop on community radio service has started in Agartala today.The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) in collaboration with the Commonwealth Educational Media Center for Asia (CEMCA). On the first day of the workshop today, experts discussed in detail the potential of community radio for the society.In the discussion, experts expressed the opinion that community radio stations have great potential for increasing social awareness on various issues in the small states of North Eastern region including Tripura. Representatives associated with community radio stations from every state in North Eastern region including Tripura, West Bengal participated in the workshop. According to community radio station experts from Delhi, there is a need for community radio stations in every district  of North Eastern region. The need for community radio stations to broadcast information especially during various disaster situations is undeniable.
 More than half a hundred representatives including representatives of various radio station organizations of the North-East participated in this workshop.Director of CEMCA B Shadrach welcomed the  participant's said that community radio in India is carrying on its 20 years of heritage and empowering different communities of the country. This medium has gained global reputation in today's era for community development, addressing local needs, service delivery and helping people during emergencies.Amit Dwivedi, Project Director, Community Radio Service (CRS) Department, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Central Government, in his address emphasized the role of community radio in social development and inclusion. Shri Dwivedi elaborated on the facilities provided by his ministry for expansion and promotion of community radio stations at the workshop.
Agartala ICFAI University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Biplab Halder said, community radio still remains an unfamiliar concept to many. However, he said there is immense potential in highlighting local voices and bringing about social change by solving specific problems of the society.Devanjana Dev Barman, Director of Tripura's only community radio station, was present on the occasion. And narrates her experience in this regard.
Mohipal Singh Rawat, Dr. Nirmalya Mukhopadhyay, Pooja and Murada, Dr. Sangeeta Kakoti and Swapnali Bhuiya among others shared their experiences and perspectives on running various community radio stations. Their discussion highlighted challenges and opportunities in content creation, community engagement and sustainability of CR initiatives. By afternoon after today's event,the experts of Community Radio Service of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting went to visit the radio station of the local community radio station 'Friends CR'. and praised their CR activities.
