Drive against private tuition by government school teachers, guardians and students up in arms

The state government has decided to launch  a drive against private tuition by government school teachers , triggering deep resentment among students and guardians. Official sources here said that the school education department in compliance with decisions taken at the highest level of the government  has decided to constitute committees at the district and subdivisional level with district education officers , inspectors of schools etc as head to spearhead the drive. But this has sparked resentment among students and guardians looking forward to good results in the annual exams in schools and also to final school leaving exams of the Board.
Speaking on condition of anonymity a guardian of Agartala said that all students and their parents want their wards to score high in all exams and they should have a right to decide on private tuition. “It is a question of freedom of choice , if necessary we will definitely engage private tutors regardless of the fact that they teach in government run schools; if serving government doctors can go for private practice and earn money why can not the teachers of government schools do so; it is well known that a number of assistant professors of government run college give private tuition and earn extra money; if earning extra money is the issue here I assert that it is a  matter between the income tax department and the earning teachers” said the guardian. He said that in case the state government persists with the ban and starts taking legal action the matter will be strongly protested.
It was during the tenure of Deepak Gupta as chief justice that the high court of Tripura had passed an order putting a ban on private tuition by government teachers and before that another order had also been passed by Agartala bench of Guwahati high court but the then left front government did not enforce the order strictly considering the sentiment of students and guardians. But the BJP government  in its first tenure had gone ahead foolishly to enforce the ban without ascertaining the sentiment of students and guardians who always prefer tuition from teachers serving in schools-government or non-government . On the question of unemployed youths being deprived of private tuition a guardian said “what we want is good tuition by knowledgeable teachers irrespective of the status of  the concerned teacher being employed or unemployed”. He opined that the government’s overdrive on the issue will only create another serious problem  for students and guardians.
