BJP faces revolt in Jubaraj Nagar area over candidature for Panchayat election, controversy in Dharma Nagar and Ambassa

The ruling BJP in Tripura is facing a revolt in many areas of the state over the declaration of nomination for the three-tier Panchayat election. Within hours of the resignation of Kamala Sagar ‘Mandal’ president Subir Chowdhury a senior leader and outgoing Gram Pradhan of the party in the Jubaraj Nagar assembly constituency in Dharma Nagar subdivision resigned from the party and joined the rival CPU (M) with forty supporters. Much to the consternation and discomfiture of the BJP the outgoing Pradhan’s daughter in law submitted nomination yesterday as CPI (M) candidate for the Panchayat Samity.

Sources from Dharma Nagar said that the Jubaraj Nagar Panchayat chief Bama Charan Nath had joined the BJP in the year 2014 and had been sincerely working for the party, becoming Panchayat chief in 2019. Even though there was no allegation as such against him the BJP party dropped Bama Charan Nath from nomination this time. Angered by the shabby treatment meted out to him Bama Charan Nath yesterday dissociated  himself from BJP formally by submitting his resignation and joining CPI (M) with forty of his supporters. His daughter in law  has also become CPI (M) candidate for the Panchayat Samity.

Sources said that a massive revolt is brewing within BJP in many parts of Dharma Nagar subdivision over the domination of opportunistic newcomers to the party and positions of irrelevance to which the old tested workers and leaders of the party have been relegated. Many veteran BJP workers and supporters have decided to sit idle in the upcoming election making the BJP worried in entire Dharma Nagar subdivision. Besides, BJP supporters in Dharma Nagar are also seething with anger over the renomination of Kajal Das for the post of Zilla Sabhadhipati. During his tenure in the post Kajal Das had earned considerable notoriety for his corrupt practices and the committed BJP supporters expected him to be dropped but with help from MLA and speaker Biswabandhu Sen he has secured renomination and this has created a revolt-like situation in Dharma Nagar in the run-up to the Panchayat polls.

To worsen matters, BJP has nominated the wife of a listed ‘Ganja’ (cannabis) peddler for the post of Panchayat Samity membership from women-reserved No-6 constituency of Ambassa. Sources said that the controversial candidate Parmita Deb is the wife of notorious ‘Ganja’ peddler Dipak Das of Kulai area who was in jail for some time recently under the NDPS act before being able to secure interim bail. The nomination of his wife has created massive resentment among BJP supporters in the entire Ambassa subdivision and this may result in a massive revolt of old and tested party workers and supporters.     (Tripurainfo)
