“A Second Chance at Life: Rare Bladder Stone Removed from Beloved Pet”

The veterinary team lead by Professor Dr. Shongsir Warson Monsang along with Dr.V. Lalzawmliana, internsand students of the College of Veterinary Sciences & A.H., R. K. Nagar, Tripura, recently performed a successful surgery on a 5-year-old female Pug suffering from a rare case of cystolith (bladder stone). The dog had been showing signs of discomfort, frequent urination, and loss of appetite. Diagnostic imaging tools like radiography and ultrasonography were performed for evaluation and confirmation of the condition.

“A Second Chance at Life: Rare Bladder Stone Removed from Beloved Pet” Bladder stones are uncommon in female as compared to their male counterparts, and they can cause serious health issues if left untreated. The main causes of stones in pets are mainly due to prolonged urinary tract infection, urine pH imbalance, low water intake and concentrated urine followed by dietary, breed predisposition, metabolic and systemic disorders. Pet parents should be alert to early warning signs such as difficulty or frequent urination, blood in urine, abdominal discomfort, or sudden changes in appetite and activity.

“A Second Chance at Life: Rare Bladder Stone Removed from Beloved Pet” “A Second Chance at Life: Rare Bladder Stone Removed from Beloved Pet” Since the pugs are brachycephalic, surgery requires well planned protocol for execution and successful outcome. The surgery was carried out under inhalation anaesthesia, and the stones were successfully removed. After careful post-operative care, the animal has made an excellent recovery without any complications.

Early veterinary attention can prevent life-threatening complications and ensure timely treatment. Regular health check-ups, proper hydration, and a balanced diet play a key role in preventing such conditions and safeguarding the well-being of pets. This rare case highlights the importance of early veterinary consultation when pets show changes in behaviour, eating, or urination patterns. Timely diagnosis and treatment not only save lives but also ensure a better quality of life for our beloved companions.

We are thankful to the Director, ARDD and Principal of the College of Veterinary Sciences & A.H., R. K. Nagar, for providing us required facilities and supporting staffs and teams for the successful surgery.
