The power department of the state government has finalized a plan to get rid of overhead electricity transmission lines in a phased manner and lay underground lines to provide relief to people from frequent power cuts and fluctuation of voltage almost every day in different parts of the state. Speaking to Tripurainfo.com the minister for power Ratan Lal Nath attributed the frequent power woes in the state at present to the overhead transmission lines which move from side to side even when there is a gentle breeze blowing or there is rain or storm . “In almost all big cities power transmission lines lie underground but here in Tripura because of special circumstances and terrain overhead lines had to be pulled from one side to another but we are going to change this now ; the matter has already been discussed and work will begin soon” said Ratan Lal Nath.

He said that there is balance between power generation or availability with requirement but the pressure of natural gas is lessening and this problem will be resolved soon. Nath also expressed concern over non-payment of TSECL’s dues by people and departments and said that they will have to be realized for betterment of power supply . He conceded that large quantities of power are pilfered daily through hooklines and underground cables can prevent this. “We have decided to lay underground lines at the first state in urban areas where payment of dues is regular and then outlying areas of the state will be taken up for extending the same facility” said Ratan Lal Nath. He also rued delayed payment of dues by the Bangladesh government for supply of 150-175 megawatts of power daily but said that regular payment from across the border will partially ease the financial burden on the TSECL and power department of the state.
