Attempted fraud on former Press Cub secretary Pranab Sarkar in the name of non-existent officer from CM office

Former Agartala Press Club secretary and leading media personality Pranab Sarkar narrowly escaped being defrauded by a person impersonating as media person who was later arrested by police. Detailing what had happened Pranab Sarkar said that early today he had received a call on mobile from a person who had introduced himself as one P. Banerjee. The man told Pranab Sarkar-quite falsely-that he had been speaking from the chief minister’s office and that Arup Deb, an undersecretary in the CM office, had asked for two mobile sets from Pranab Sarkar and that the cost of the mobiles would be reimbursed later on .

Having naturally developed doubts over the issue Pranab called up the chief minister’s press secretary Kamal Mullick and sought to know whether there was any under-secretary called Arup Deb in the CMO and whether he had sought two mobile sets as per CM’s instruction . Pranab also spoke to the chief minister and came to know that a completely false call had been made. Pranab then informed the AIG Krishnendu Chakraborty of what had happened and he in turn instructed the SP (Cyber Cell) to have the matter inquired . Accordingly the fraud was detected with the mobile data including the number given them by Pranab Sarkar. As per their instruction Pranab told the mischievous caller to come to the Bidur Karta Chaumuhuni to take delivery of the mobiles and himself went to the spot with small boxes looking like new mobile sets. As soon as the fraud caller appeared on the spot the police personnel lying in wait caught him and brought him to the West Agartala police station . The fraud caller turned out to be a free-lance photographer named Pallab Nag. Till latest reports came in Pallab Nag is under interrogation in West Agartala police station while Pranab Sarkar who is also a trained advocate said that he will pursue the case in larger interest.
