Since its inception in the year 2006 through upgradation of erstwhile Tripura Engineering College (TEC) the NIT Agartala has been mired in many a controversy on its contract works, purchase of materials and in giving job offers. But the latest controversy is in relation to a clerical assistant in the office of the NIT director S. K. PATRA. According to authentic reports made available by sources in NIT, the contractual clerical assistant at work in the NIT director’s office Bidyut Kumar Ghose had once been a close lieutenant of former power minister Manik Dey. He had secured the clerical assistant’s job in the NIT at the direct intervention of then minister Manik Dey because of his close association with the CPI (M) then. But after 2018 when the ruling BJP had come to power for the first time this Bidyut Ghose changed political jersey overnight and became a diehard BJP supporter.

Now Bidyut is ruling the roost in NIT Agartala on the strength of his close relation with the bosses despite being only a contractual clerical assistant. Sources said that Bidyut Ghosh had first started earning his slush money by taking bribes from aspirants for contractual jobs and since then he has expanded his tentacles in more important recruitments and even in the matter of purchase of materials for the NIT. Recently allegations have arisen over recruitment of assistant professors, assistant registers and private security staff in NIT as Bidyut Ghosh is said to have charged and gained bribes between Rs 2 lakhs and 20 lakhs for selling the jobs. Despite being apprised of this massive scandal involving Bidyut Ghosh the NIT authority have kept mum on the issue because a number of high officials of NIT are involved in the scam with Bidyut Ghosh.

Apart from his corrupt practices , Bidyut Ghosh has also earned considerable notoriety for his misbehavior with students and other staff members , specially the contractual staff . Recently , a video has surfaced in the social media showing Bidyut Ghosh demanding money for giving a job to an aspirant. A formal complaint online has been filed against him with the prime minister Narendra Modi’s office mail address also. But till now no action has been taken even though the director of NIT S. K. PATRA is fully aware of all the allegations. This has given rise to doubts in the minds of staff members of NIT and the informed people about the personal integrity of the NIT director.
