Floods in Tripura caused massive devastation this year. In order to ascertain the major factors that led to the damages to properties and excessive flooding, the Science and Technology department of Tripura would conduct a scientific investigation and study, Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma who also holds the charge of Science and Technology department told reporters on Tuesday. Speaking at a relief distribution event in Poangbari block, South Tripura District, Debbarma emphasized that the government is treating the matter with utmost seriousness.
"There will be questions raised in the state assembly by both the ruling and opposition parties about why such widespread devastation occurred in Tripura this year after so many years," Debbarma said. "After the floods began, I consulted with experts, and they believe that the floods might be linked to climate change in Tripura. Deforestation has dried up catchment areas, preventing rainwater from being absorbed. Whenever it rains heavily, the water goes downstream of the river without any hindrance," he added.
Debbarma also confirmed that his department is planning to conduct the study in collaboration with the central government. "We are very serious about this issue. The matter will be properly studied, and we will seek central government support," he assured. The Minister, along with a delegation of Tipra Motha legislators, visited several flood-affected areas in the Poangbari RD Block inspection from ground zero and to distribute relief from the Forest Department.
"The floods have left widespread devastation across the state. In this area alone, 44 families have been displaced, with 17 families currently taking shelter in a relief camp. Electricity services have been disrupted, and road restoration is still ongoing. I have instructed all department officers to complete the work as quickly as possible and ensure that every affected family is properly surveyed," he said.Regarding relief efforts, Debbarma stated, "We have done our best to provide assistance. I assured the affected families that we stand with them in these difficult times.”
