Tripura’s ‘Queen Variety’ pineapple gets Geographical Indication (GI) tagging from Centre

In a new feather on its cap the famous ‘Queen Variety’ pineapple in Tripura has been given the ‘Geographical Indication’ (GI) tag for its quality and origin in the state’s particular geographical area. Announcing this in a conference of the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) Ratan Lal Nath said that from now on 300 pineapple growers of the state will be able to use the GI tag on their products . All 300 pineapple growers were also awarded in the conference presided over by Ratan Lal. In the entire northeast 13 agricultural products including the ‘Queen Variety’ pineapples of Tripura have been given permission to use GI tag on their products . The union ministry of Doner is working on this in the northeastern region.

Addressing the conference the agriculture minister Ratan Lal Nath hailed the consistent efforts of the prime minister Narendra Modi to develop agriculture and horticulture in the country and raise the income level of farmers. “This GI tagging is part of the larger endeavour of the Centre to work for the welfare of the farmers ; this will go a long way in raising the income level of farmers and horticulturists” said Ratan Lal. He also related the various benefits being given by Centre to farmers across the country and asserted that this has ushered in a new age of development for then farmers. .

Addressing the conference leading GI specialist Dr Rajani Kanta Dwivedi , a padmasri, said that GI tagging will bring new prosperity to the farmers and horticulturists . He also explained in detail that GI tagging really means and how it is done . Dr Dwivedi also predicted increased income for the farmers of pineapple in the international market.
