DM (Unakoti) passes bizarre order, putting restrictions on dresses worn by employees during office hour

In a clean break with past practices, the DM (Unakoti) Dr Vishal Kumar has put restrictions on dresses worn by employees in his office during office hour. In an official ‘ORDER’ dated March 21 the DM has directed the employees saying “all staff of this office should wear formal shirt and pant/trousers during office duty henceforth” , adding that “all the female staff are also requested to maintain decent dress code (unspecified) within the purview of office decorum”.

The order of the DM Vishal Kumar was provoked by his observation that “some staff of this office wear T-shirts while performing duties in the office which looks indecent and it is not under the purview of office decorum”. Nothing of the reaction of the employees to the order is as yet known but employees and officers at Agartala feel that wearing T-shirts can by no stretch of imagination be termed as ‘indecent’ and the order is based on ‘subjective impression’ of the DM.

This is the first time that such an order has been passed by as high an official as DM as question of dress code is scrupulously followed in the case of students of schools and colleges as well as employees working in security forces and in departments like Fire Brigade and disaster management etc. “So far only women have been targeted on the question of dress code and I recall that more than two decades ago a girl student of a Calcutta based college had been turned out because of her indecent dress ; this is possibly the first time that males are being targeted and T-shirts are being taken as indecent by a high government official” said a retired employee of the settlement department of the state government here.
