The union home minister Amit Shah and senior BJP leaders including Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have started training guns on the ‘Tipra Motha’ and its supreme leaders Pradyot Kishore for misleading tribal masses on the question of ‘Greater Tipraland’. As reported by a local print media after an interview Amit Shah accused the ‘Motha’ and its leader of playing with the sentiments of the tribal people of Tripura. “They have verbally raised the demand for so-called Greater Tipraland but what this means has not been defined or explained ; it was by playing with the sentiments of the tribals that Pradyot managed to capture the ADC in 2021 but has done precious little for the tribal people” said Amit Shah to the interviewer.

Pointing out the discrepancies in the stand of ‘Tipra Motha’ vis-à-vis its demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’ Amit Shah said that even in their vision document the party has not made any mention of the demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’. What it has said is “Tipra Motha party is fully committed to our core ideological demand of a permanent constitutional solution for the indigenous people of Tripura and until it is not achieved , we shall continue to fight for the rights of our people”. Where is the demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’ or ‘Tipraland’ in this vision document.

Amit Shah said that it clearly emerges from the vision document that they want a solution within the parameters of the constitution but what is their demand and what do they demand ? They have not cited any legal opinion in this . Moreover, if they mean a solution under Article 244-A of the constitution, the ‘Tipra Motha’ should remember that this provision had been enacted specifically for Meghalaya in 1969 to make it an autonomous state under Assam but that provision became infructuous after the legislative passage of second northeast reorganization act in 1971 whereby Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur became full-fledged states and Mizoram became a union territory with effect from January 21 1972,said Amit Shah, adding that such redundant can not be fulfilled and a small state like Tripura can not be further divided.

The Assam BJP chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma added another spin to the ‘Tipra Motha’ demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’ saying “the Bengalis here constitute 70% of the population and if they now demand a ‘Bangalistan’ state, what will happen ? Can all these demands for district-like states be fulfilled ?” Sarma asked. He called upon ‘Tipra Motha’ not to play with the sentiments of people and mislead them. “There must be a sense of realism and valid ground for raising a demand ; how can a demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’. “There must be a sense of realism and valid ground for raising a demand ; how can a demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’ be raised after ADC under 6th schedule was established way back in 1985” asked Himanta.
