With the last date for filing nomination only five days away the political parties have engaged in hectic parleys to finalise nomination of candidates. The opposition left front held a meeting today under the stewardship of Front convener and former Rajya Sabha MP Narayan Kar. Sources in the Front said that the candidatures for the upcoming assembly polls have been finalized and the list will be announced in a press conference at 7-00 in the night. Sources said that 12/19 slots in the left front nomination list will be kept open for allotment to the Congress which is all set to fight the polls in alliance.

Apart from this, the election committee of the ruling BJP also held a meeting in ‘Sonartari’ hotel to prepare a tentative list of nominees for the polls for final approval and ratification by the party’s central leadership and parliamentary board. Sambit Patra will leave for Delhi this afternoon with the tentative list which will have many new names and a number of sitting MLAs will be dropped. Sources in BJP said that the meeting at hotel ‘Sonartari’ was attended among others by chief minister Dr Manik Saha, deputy chief minister Jishnu Debbarma, party’s state president Rajiv Bhattacharjee, MP Pratima Bhowmik , RS MP Biplab Kumar Deb and minister for education Ratan Lal Nath. The ‘Trinamool Congress’ which hardly has a presence in the state has decided to contest all the sixty seats in the assembly polls but nothing more than this was disclosed by the party.

But in a most significant development, a group of ‘Tipra Motha’ leaders including ADC CEM Purna Chandra Jamatya, deputy CEM Animesh Debbarma, chairman Jagadish Debbarma, Mebar Kumar Jamatya and Bijay Hrangkhawal are leaving for Delhi this afternoon to attend a meeting with union home minister Amit Shah and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Speaking to media Animesh said that party supremo Pradyot Kishore who is already in Delhi held a meeting with Amit Shah and Himanta on his demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’ and its acceptance by Centre as a condition for alliance with BJP for the upcoming assembly polls. Sources said that having gone through many flip flops on the issue Pradyot Kishore has already scaled down his demand from ‘Tipraland’ to separate state covering the ADC areas. He has made it clear that if the centre gives a commitment that a separate state will be conceded he with withdraw his demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’ and ally with the BJP in the assembly polls. What will be agreed upon in the meeting in Delhi is still uncertain but sources said that Pradyot is under pressure from party colleagues to work out a conciliation formula so that an understanding with BJP can be reached. What has become major headaches for Pradyot and his party is lack of resources and non-allotment of a separate symbol by the election commission. For the BJP the main problem is the stark possibility that without a regional ally it will definitely lose the polls because of the party’s growing lack of popularity with the electorate owing to non-performance over the past five years. These factors may ultimately facilitate an electoral understanding between the BJP and the ‘Tipra Motha’.
