In a reversal of five yearold trend the CPI (M) supporters yesterday put up a strong resistance against the unprovoked attack on their procession in Singicherra area of Khowai and injured at least twelve BJP miscreants after two CPI (M) workers had been attacked and assaulted in a brazen manner in front of police by the BJP miscreants. Both the parties made allegations and counter-allegations over the incident but police sources said that CPI (M) had obtained permission in advance for their rally yesterday to press for a five point charter of demands.

The procession was to pass through the Singicherra area near the town and a large number of BJP miscreants had gathered in Beltoli area in Singicherra to prevent the CPI (M)’s procession from passing through the area. The BJP gathering was without permission of the police but a large posse of police force led by SDPO (Khowai) Rajiv Sutradahar did not try to remove the BJP supporters from the area. As the CPI (M) supporters in procession near the Beltoli area the BJP miscreants gathered on the spot started stone-pelting and attacking the CPI (M) supporters among whom local leaders Kanulal De and Udai Krishna Das sustained serious injuries and had to be sent to hospital.

Sources said that in the face of unprovoked attack from BJP the CPI (M) supporters who outnumbered the ruling party turned back and counter-attacked the BJP miscreants, inflicting injuries on Satyajit Paul, Gopal Deb, Sanjay Nath Sharma , Santosh Das, Biplab Das and Sagar Ghosh . Several other BJP miscreants who had sustained injuries had to be rushed to GBP hospital, Agartala. The CPI (M) filed a specific complaint citing names of BJP miscreants with the Khowai police station.

Even though the BJP tried to pin the blame for the violence on CPI (M) police sources said that it was BJP’s unprovoked attack that had drawn retaliation in self-defence from the CPI (M).

Meanwhile, the CPI (M)’s state secretariat member AIKS state president Pabitra Kar condemned a statement made by BJP blaming him for the violence . Kar who was present in Khowai yesterday said that in all other parts of the subdivision CPI (M)’s programmes had been peaceful but there was clash yesterday because of the unprovoked attack of the BJP miscreants. He demanded that police be asked to take drastic action against the BJP miscreants impartially . Pabitra said that BJP had been shaken by the massive turn-out in CPI (M)’s procession yesterday and the growing support for CPI (M) . Yesterday’s programme of the CPI (M) was led , besides Pabitra Kar, by former ADC chairman Ranjit Debbarma and former MLA Padma Kumar Debbarma.
