The first round of pre-arranged discussion between the chief minister Dr Manik Saha and representatives of the retrenched 10,323 teachers ended on a hopeful note yesterday in the evening. Even though the discussion remained inconclusive because of the chief minister’s preoccupation with another programme , the participants on behalf of the retrenched teachers as well as their legal consultant advocate Chandra Sekhar Sinha said that the chief minister was interested in resolving the problem and a second round of discussion will be held at mutually convenient time to break the deadlock and pave the way for reinstatement of the illegally sacked teachers.

Sources said that , as decided earlier, the representatives of retrenched teachers, had entered the chief minister’s chamber at 5-00 in the evening yesterday , accompanied by their legal consultant advocate Chandra Sekhar Sinha . The advocate general S.S.De, law secretary Biswajit Palit were there to assist the chief minister. In the course of discussion it emerged clearly that only a small number of teachers had been terminated from service by court order and not all the 10,323 teachers by high court or supreme court order. What followed was a discussion over how to protect and reinstate the job-losers but the discussion remained inconclusive as the chief minister had another programme to attend. It was decided that the chief minister will call the teachers again for a final round of discussion. Advocate Chandra Sekhar Sinha who had attended the meeting with retrenched teachers as legal specialist said that the chief minister Dr Manik Saha was positive on the issue and the matter will possibly be resolved.

Meanwhile, the section of teachers on fast-unto-death programme in Orient Chaumuhuni refrained from taking part in the discussion yesterday as they had been asked merely to send a legal specialist to represent them. Pradip Banik who is the leader of the group of teachers on fast-unto-death programme said that they were keen to be represented by five teachers but they had received a call from the chief minister’s office to send only a legal specialist. “In protest we kept away from the meeting ; we are waiting and watching the situation; if the government responds positively well and good but , if not, we will continue our agitation in various forms” said Pradip Banik.
