Despite the initial sound and fury about making Tripura ‘addiction free’, the addiction to liquor, cannabis and dangerous forms of drugs has grown exponentially in the state over the past four and half years. While proof of this is available daily in different parts of the state, the arrest yesterday of a woman for carrying brown sugar in Kanchanpur has brought to the problem to the fore yet again. Police sources said that bigger sharks in drug peddling have now started deploying women including house-wives in the distribution and sale racket of drugs to avoid police vigil.
In a bizarre incident yesterday the police in Kanchanpur yesterday arrested a house-wife Pranati Shabdakar (30) , a house-wife, from a bus carrying passengers from Dharma Nagar to Kanchanpur with considerable amount of drugs. Including Heroin and and large amount of cash. Sources said that acting on a tip-off the officer in charge of Kanchanpur police station Uddam Debbarma conducted a search operation on a bus coming from Dharma Nagar and picked on Pranati Shabdakar (30) and recovered a large quantity of toxic Heroin and Brown Sugar and large amount of cash. After bringing her to the Kanchanpur police station police slapped a complaint 65/22 under NDPS act.
In the course of initial interrogation Pranati confessed that she had been involved in the drug running racket for quite some time and she sold her items among students of college and schools. She is a resident of Shabdakar para in Netaji Nagar area under Kanchanpur town. The arrest of Pranati Shabdakar has triggered a furore in entire Kanchanpur subdivision which is already gripped by largescale drug addiction . Sources said that raids on drug peddlers are being conducted on a regular basis but the quantity of drugs recovered do not justify registration of case under draconian NDPS act and the culprits easily obtain bail and escape punishment. But effort is on to curb the drug menace, sources said, adding that Pranati is being produced in court today and police remand will be sought.
