The infamous ‘Bulldozer’ politics of UP seems to have descended in Tripura with the demolition of twenty two ‘illegal’ roadside shops on both sides of the Battala-Dashamighat road yesterday. The shop-keepers were not given time to remove their cash and valuables to safe places despite appeals and a twenty four hour Battala market bandh is on today to protest the wanton demolition . A procession of all evicted shop-keepers and traders today marched through the Battala and Jaynagar area to register their protest. A few businessmen evicted yesterday said that many of the shops did not have valid papers but some did have . When the demolition party of AMC arrived with bulldozer the shop-keepers sought time to remove their merchandise and an assurance that they will be preferentially rehabilitated in future.
Nothing was offered and the demolition by bulldozer went on for sometime till all 22 shops were pulled down . The shop-keepers in protest took out a procession and the leader of the opposition Manik Sarkar, Sadar divisional committee secretary of CPI (M) Debasish Ganguly and former MLA Asish Saha rushed to the spot and spoke to the evicted businessmen , assuring them of help. The leader of the opposition Manik Sarkar, while speaking to media, wonder what kind of smart city will be built on the bones and gore of helpless people who have lost their livelihood.
However, speaking to media the AMC chairman Dipak Majumder justified the demolition saying the illegal occupants had been given time and asked to wind up their establishments that were blocking drains and creating water logging problems. “We had pointed out to them that they were blocking roads illegally preventing measures to create drains and sewerage system but they did not listen ; the smart city work is time bound, so we had to remove them from roads meant for people and vehicles” said Dipak Majumder. A twenty four hour Battala bazar bandh is being observed today by the aggrieved and evicted businessmen and traders of Battala.
