As promised in the state assembly yesterday, the chief minister Dr Manik Saha is all set to meet six representatives of the retrenched 10,323 teachers tomorrow in his official chamber. The date and venue of the meeting has already been communicated to the leaders of the Joint Movement Committee (JMC) spearheading the agitation of retrenched teachers for reinstatement from the chief minister’s office. Altogether six representatives have been invited for talks at 10-30 AM tomorrow.

The issue of the discussion had come up in the state assembly yesterday in the course of the last day’s session as a large group of teachers marching to the state assembly had been subjected to assault with lathis, water cannon and tear gas shells by police and TSR jawans on duty. When the matter was raised in the assembly the leader of the opposition Manik Sarkar suggested to the chief minister that the representatives of the retrenched teachers be invited for a discussion over their issue as they belong to the state. The chief minister had assured the house yesterday that he will hold the discussion suggested . Accordingly , invitations have been sent to the representatives for tomorrow’s discussion.

The issue has assumed significance as already 139 of the retrenched teachers have either died of diseases or committed suicide. Besides, the fact that neither supreme court nor the high court passed any order for en masse dismissal of all the teachers has put the government in a soup.
