Fresh setback in court : state government asked to pay compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to innocent housewife for custodial torture by police

Tripura government suffered yet another setback in high court by being directed to pay a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to innocent house-wife Preyasi Dutta-Debnath (28) and her husband for the custodial torture perpetrated on them by police for extracting a confession to the false charge of theft. The order was passed by chief justice Indrajit Mohanty and justice S.G.Chatterjee of the high court that had taken suo moto cognizance of the ,matter on the basis of a newspaper report.

The matter originated from GBP police outpost where Preyasi Dutta-Debnath and her husband had been confined on the false charge of theft and were subjected to custodial torture as a result of which Preyasi had to be treated in GBP hospital. In response to high court’s directive an under-secretary of the state government had to file an affidavit but the high court bench was not satisfied with this and appointed an advocate Aradhita Debbarma as amicus curae for a detailed report on the matter.

The superintendent of GBP hospital had also been directed to file a report giving details of treatment undergone by Preyasi Dutta-Debnath. The matter came up on Wednesday last and having considered all the issues the division bench comprising chief justice Indrajit Mohanty and justice S.G.Chatterjee ordered the state government to give a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakhs to the affected housewife Preyasi Dutta-Debnath.
