Sukanta Academy English medium school reeling under crippling shortage of teachers

The state government’s failure to recruit teachers-what with fund cruch and what with administrative sloth-has created a serious crisis of teachers in most of the schools. Nothing illustrates the point better than the critical condition of Sukanta Academy English medium school in Ranir Bazar area of Jirania subdivision, recently promoted to ‘Vidyajyoti’ category of schools. Once a reputed school, the Sukanta Academy English medium school now reels under an acute shortage of teachers and other problems.



The headmistress of the school Sarbani Das narrated the woes of running the school while speaking to this correspondent on phone. “In the primary section of the school we have 1100 students and 19 sections but we have only 16 UGT teachers, 4/5 graduate teachers have been deputed from noon section to primary level but even this is not enough; we need at least five more teachers for the primary section over and above what we have now” said Sarbani Das .



She said that the noon section is facing a more serious problem in terms of teacher shortage as the section has huge number of students. The problem is more acute for classes XI and XII. “There are one teacher each for subjects like Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology and political science; for Bengali we are deploying graduate teachers of the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), having no other alternative; but problem in english teaching at higher secondary level has become difficult now because the lone english teacher has recently been transferred to Brendra Nagar higher secondary school” said Sarbani Das.



She said that besides shortage of teachers the school needs for class rooms whose construction will start soon. “The school authority is also in advanced stage of negotiations for acquiring land for play field and it is hoped that the matter will be resolved soon. “I have kept the department informed of all the problems and I hope steps will soon be taken to resolve the problems, at present we are improvising to keep the school running” said Sarbani Das.
