Tripura Central University (TCU) , a pride of the state, is gasping for breath with severe shortage of teachers and non-teaching staff retarding its work at every stage. According to information handed out by the university authority the TCU is currently short of as many as 145 teachers and 70 non-teaching employees. But there is no initiative on the part of the university to fill up the posts, reportedly due lack of approval from the university grants commission (UGC) and the union finance ministry. Officially the vice chancellor of the university Dr Ganga Prasad Prosein could not give any explanation for the continued and crippling staff shortage in the university.
Yesterday the VC Ganga Prasad Sein , deputy registrar of the university Dr Somdeb Banik and professor Benod Chandra Tripathi spoke to media in the council hall of the university’s administrative building . Asked why the university could not retain its position among the top 100 universities of the country the deputy registrar Dr Somdeb Banik said that the unfavourable student: teacher ratio could be one reason for this . However the VC Ganga Prasad Sein said that altogether 2,94,816 students have applied for admission to TCU through the common university entrance test (CUET) for the academic year 2022-2023, indirectly suggesting that all is well with the limping TCU.
Apart from this, the VC told media that at present the university has a student enrollment strength of 4597 including 7 students who are foreigners. He said that the CUET will come off between September 1-11 and altogether 2,94,816 students have applied for admission to 3031 seats in the university in 39 subjects. The VC said that initiative has been taken to introduce 4 new PG courses in the TCU and the new subjects are Social Work, Yoga, Manipuri Dance and National Security Study. However, sources among teachers and non-teaching staff in the university said that the standard of the university had started falling since the year 2018 and now the situation is critical.
